Life After A Crown
Before we place a crown, patients almost always have the same unspoken question. They’re not just wondering about the procedure; they’re also wondering what comes after. Will it feel weird? Will eating be different? Will it actually feel like their tooth again? It’s entirely fair to wonder, and we want to answer honestly. Read on to learn more.
The First Few Days After a Crown
Let’s set some realistic expectations up front. In the first few days, you might notice some mild discomfort or sensitivity around the crown. This is completely normal and will subside within a few days. Some mild temperature sensitivity and a heightened awareness when chewing are also typical as your mouth adjusts. This phase doesn’t last long, usually a week or two.
What Changes With Eating
Eating is usually the biggest concern for our patients. In the short term, you’ll want to chew a little more carefully on that side, not because you have to, but because it’s instinct as you’re getting used to the crown. Once your bite settles, you’ll feel more confident chewing on that tooth than you did before the crown. The tooth is now restored and strong, rather than cracked, worn, or compromised. You get full function back, often better than what you had before treatment.
After the Adjustment Period
This is the outcome we are always working toward: a crown that feels like your tooth, not a foreign object. When a crown is made well and fits properly, that’s genuinely what happens. You’ll stop thinking about it entirely, and the crown becomes part of your mouth like any other tooth.
If something continues to feel off, please come back in. Your crown may need a small adjustment, and there’s no reason to wait and hope it resolves on its own.
What Stays the Same After a Crown
Your daily routine will remain unchanged, and your smile will look natural on the outside, with a balanced bite inside. Stability returns, along with the ability to use your tooth fully and confidently, without thinking twice.
